Momo's 'If this can't be tolerated, what can't be?' is a single that carries emotion as direct as its long title. Rather than amplifying the feeling with aggressive sound, we aimed for the weight of the lyrics to emerge naturally within a restrained arrangement — an objection delivered in calm tone.

Vocal recording maintained a delivery close to Momo's natural speaking voice. Rather than forcing the throat, we separated the conversational sections from the emotionally rising final portion into different takes, and applied de-essing carefully in editing so sibilant and fricative consonants wouldn't be overemphasized. Doubling was used minimally to preserve the clarity of a single main line.

During mixing, drum and guitar spaces were separated without intruding on the mid-range vocal energy, and reverb was kept short to maintain the distance of listening to a story inside a room. Mastering pushed loudness only moderately so the quiet-section air would remain intact.

The finished track pairs well with listeners who chew on the meaning of the lyrics. A single whose nuance emerges most clearly on studio monitors late at night.
